What professors,lecturers and teachers consider to be canonical literature may not necessarily be what our generation considers literature..
does literature have to be novels, such as Pride and Prejudice that have made an impact on generations to be considered true literature?
what about the fresh new authors, with original ideas, who are trying to make an impact on this generation, why are they not seen as true literature, good enough to be taught on a literature course, is it because they havent acquired the reputation, and therefore not the historical background to make them seen as literature?
i see literature as a variety of writing, ranging from Shakespeare's infamous plays, to Dan Brown's the Da Vinci Code, and why in my eyes do i see them as literature, because they have made an impact on my life, the authors powerful stories have immeresed me into their books, or plays, or novels, and that is enough for me to consider them true literature.
I also believe that we shouldnt limited or selective when choosing what is literature, because how are we to decide what literature is without being subjective?

I agree with you too...you haven't mentioned films or poetry though. They've been written and have probabably made an impact on people's lives, therefore they should probably be considered as literature too.

Music lyrics can make an impact but many popular musicians wouldn't consider they are making literature. is lit something that can be anaysed i.e. only if it can be pulled apart for its meaning?

I agree with you manpreet. Impact is importnat when it comes to literature. and i think that you are right about the new authors, but i think there is a line as to where literture stops being literture and is just a product of media entertainment

ReplyDeletei agree completely and that its not fair how authors that dont get the right recognition may not be considered literature, if people havent read the book i dont think they should get an opinion on it whether it is literature or not

ReplyDeleteYour damn right with the selective thing. Someones gonner say yeah thats literature- someone else: no it isint. Its just the way it is. How the hell do you pick and choose. When a person has placed so much time and effort to make a piece, just for you to turn round and class it off as literature- how is that fair?
