A thousand splendid suns from the Marxist perspective

A thousand splendid suns, conveys the story of two women, Maryam and Laila who are brought together through their tragic lives.

With Maryam's life she finds herself never having any power, from a child she was manipulated by her mother and their lives depend on her father who is a powerful entrepeneur yet is ashamed of them as maryam is born out of an illicit affair with her mother who is a lowly maid in her father's mansion. However when her mother dies, Maryam being naive and innocent believes that her father will help her and turns to him as a means of escape, yet her father, Jalil, influenced by his other wives who want nothing but to see the back of Maryam, persuade him to marry her off to anyone possible. This shows how they as upper class see Maryam nothing as a nuisance, and because of her mother's status in society Maryam is not able to be seen as anything but an illegitimate daughter and this then leads to her being married to a working class desperate man, Rasheed. Therefore the cycle continues in her being married to another who is a in low position in society and can give her nothing more than the neccesities. As he continues to abuse her she finds herself losing her confidence and self esteem and is soon a quiet, abused housewife with no prospects or happiness. From a marxist view this would have been as a result as her poor mother, and the secret affair, giving her a poor start to life, which is then worsened when she is married. However if Maryam's mother had a higher status, Maryam may have been educated and been able to gain better prospects and maybe a more loving husband.
However with Laila'slife she is given the opportunity to gain a good education as her father is a teacher and strongly believes in everyone being educated to the highest degree possible. However this power to give the education to Laila lies with father which shows how her course in life is determined by him and not herself.
